Aker Solutions secures contract to upgrade Equinor’s Mongstad refinery

Located 70km north of Bergen, the Mongstad refinery is a pivotal hub for the distribution of Norwegian oil and gas.

Aker Solutions has secured a substantial contract from Equinor to enhance the wastewater treatment facilities at the Mongstad refinery in Norway.

The contract, valued between Nkr2.5bn ($226.15m) and Nkr4.0bn, involves engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning services.

Located 70km north of Bergen, the Mongstad refinery is a pivotal hub for the distribution of Norwegian oil and gas.

The facility’s wastewater treatment plant is designed to process water from various sources including the refinery, offsite locations and the adjoining oil terminal.

Aker Solutions’ engineering office in Bergen will spearhead the project, handling project management, engineering and procurement.

Prefabrication and assembly will occur at the Egersund yard, while the Stord yard will supply construction personnel to Mongstad.

At its peak, the project is expected to employ more than 500 workers.

The initiative is set to commence immediately and is projected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2026.

Aker Solutions executive vice-president and head of life cycle segment Paal Eikeseth said: “Equinor’s goal is to reduce emissions significantly from the Mongstad refinery. This matches our aim to enable our customers to increase efficiency and minimise emissions in their operations, and ensure safe and responsible production.”

Earlier this year, Equinor entrusted Aker Solutions with a feasibility study aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions at the Mongstad refinery.

This study is part of a broader vision to transform the industrial site into a low-carbon hub.

It includes plans for a new blue hydrogen production facility using natural and refinery fuel gas, with an integrated carbon capture and export system.

Furthermore, it encompasses the development of a sustainable aviation fuel production facility using municipal solid waste, targeting emission reductions exceeding 70%.
