Turkey awards equipment contract for Black Sea gas project

UK manufacturer Hunting will supply titanium stress joints as part of development of the Sakarya deepwater field

UK-headquartered Hunting has secured an equipment supply contract for the third development phase at Turkey’s huge Sakarya gas project in the Black Sea.

Hunting said on Monday that it has been awarded a $31-million order to supply titanium stress joints (TSJs), flexible connections that link floating production vessels to subsea systems.

Sakarya operator Turkish Petroleum (TPAO) aims to deploy a new floating production unit for phase three of Sakarya which will handle gas from a 32-well subsea system design to boost output to 40 million cubic metres per day.

Hunting said that its subsea spring business unit in Houston will supply six TSJs.

The contract is expected to be completed over the next two years, with the first delivery expected in the first quarter of 2027, Hunting said.

Hunting previously won a $21 million contract to supply TSJs for phase two of Sakarya — which involves a floating production, storage and offloading vessel — with that work due for completion by 2026.

“Our continued success in the Turkish area of the Black Sea demonstrates the international demand and strength of Hunting’s titanium stress joint product offering,” said Hunting chief executive Jim Johnson.

“This order continues the group’s run of success deploying this product line into key offshore regions including the Black Sea, Guyana and the US Gulf,” he added.

The company said it is “actively pursuing” additional opportunities in Sakarya phase-three for its recently acquired Flexible Engineered Solutions business in the UK, which offers fluid transfer technology.

Chinese contractor Wison New Energies in May emerged as the front runner for an engineering, procurement and construction contract for an FPU to be deployed on the third phase of the Sakarya project, sources previously told Upstream.
