Expro deploys heaviest casing string to date

Expro used the Transocean Deepwater Titan, an eighth-generation ultra-deep-water drilling vessel, for the operation.

Expro has set a new world record in offshore well construction by deploying the heaviest casing string leveraging its Blackhawk Gen III Wireless Top Drive Cement Head with Skyhook technology.

The company made the deployment during a key project for a major client in the Gulf of Mexico, although specific names were not disclosed.

Expro used the Transocean Deepwater Titan, an eighth-generation ultra-deep-water drilling vessel, for the operation.

According to the company, the deployment of the casing, bearing a maximum hook load of 2.84 million pounds (mlb), surpassed all former records for offshore operations.

The Gen III cement head, equipped with Skyhook technology, is now the industry’s only 3mlb combined rated cementing system.

The Blackhawk Gen III Top-Drive Cement Head is specifically designed for rotating during the cementing of drill pipe-deployed casing strings or liners.

Paired with the Skyhook Cement Line Make-Up Device, these wireless cement heads enhance safety by removing the need for personnel above the rig floor, and improve rig efficiency.

Designed to withstand complete pressure and tensile strength, the Blackhawk Gen III cement head was instrumental in realising this advancement, Expro said.

It has the ability to maintain full performance and structural integrity under high-pressure conditions, without the need for derating.

Expro Well Construction vice-president Jeremy Angelle said: “This deployment marks a step-change in offshore cementing, setting a new standard for ultra-deep high-pressure targets.

“We are extremely proud to have supported this operator in achieving this critical milestone with a robust, high-performance cement head that delivered safely and reliably under record-setting loads.”
