Saipem opens drilling simulator centre

An Italian offshore contractor has opened a new drilling training centre with simulators and accreditation from International Well Control Forum

Saipem has opened a training centre equipped with simulators to teach crews to use the latest drilling rig technology, including cyber-enabled control seats.

The Italian offshore contractor has designed training programs that integrate theory and practice with the latest drill-floor and control system technologies, for an immersive approach to enhancing its teams’ capabilities.

The centre is accredited by the International Well Control Forum (IWCF), the global body for well control competency certification, with which Saipem celebrates 32 years of membership.

At its heart is a full-scale simulator, which replicates operational equipment and controls, with drilling scenarios for an immersive experience for trainees.

Saipem said the simulation “reproduces the dimensions and perceptions of a drilling rig on a screen composed of 24 monitors”, which span over 8 m in length and 3 m in height.

Its ’cyber chairs’ are equipped with the same human-machine interfaces and control systems installed on actual rigs, enabling an accurate replication of commands, settings, and operational supervision.

Saipem said the simulator “is based on an advanced mathematical and fluid-dynamic model, capable of emulating well geological conditions and reproducing offshore drilling dynamics.”

The Drilling Training Centre will deliver internationally recognised courses and issue certifications for key personnel working on drilling rigs.

Saipem made this strategic investment to strengthen the development of its drilling crews at a time when drillfloor operations are becoming increasingly automated.

The Milan, Italy-headquartered group said the centre is led by instructors with extensive industry experience, and “offers the possibility of conducting training and certification offsite, directly on location, ensuring maximum flexibility.”
