AFC Women set for celebration of inaugural season

AFC Women set for celebration of inaugural season

Late last year Aberdeen FC announced the launch of a Senior Women’s team for the first time in its history building on a longstanding affiliation with AFC Ladies.

Since then a dynamic management team has been appointed, the core of the existing squad has been retained and a number of exciting new talents have signed-up.

Led by Harley Hamdani and former Scotland International, Emma Hunter, who both work for AFC’s partner charity, Aberdeen FC Community Trust, the team has been propelled to the top of the SWFL Division One North. With just a few matches of the season remaining it is hoped that the squad will achieve promotion to the second tier as part of the ambition to be competing at the summit of the game within a few years. That ambition will be aided by the opening of a new £12 million state-of-the-art Community Hub, Professional Training Campus and Youth Academy later this year, enhancing the existing high-performance environment that exists, with supporting sports science and medical infrastructure.

Undoubtedly the initial success has been driven by the new relationship and commitment from AFC but the huge strides that are being taken would not have been possible without the backing of headline sponsor, Bosaklis.

Aligned with Boskalis, the aim is not only to produce a winning team but also to develop more girls and women in football, encouraging those with a passion to play professionally, whilst also making football as diverse and inclusive as possible.

Later this year there will be another first for the club with the AFC Women Player of the Year Awards Lunch set to take place on Friday 27th September at the Sandman Hotel.

After such a promising start to the season it is hoped that there will be plenty to celebrate at this inaugural event, which will be sponsored by Boskalis.

The event will be hosted by BT Sports and Premier Sports presenter Emma Dodds, with entertainment from Scottish singer, columnist, television presenter, radio DJ and actress, Michelle McManus.

Shelley Kerr, who led the nation to our first World Cup in over 20 years as Scotland National Team Manager will also be on hand to talk about that experience and present the awards.

A limited number of tables remain available for the event and are available to book now priced at £750 +VAT for a table of 10, individual places are also available for £75 +VAT.

The package includes a drink on arrival, a 3-course meal with a half bottle of wine per person and the AFC Women first team squad and management team in attendance.
