AREG comment on Aberdeenshire ACORN project being selected for funding

Jean Morrison, chair of Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG), welcomed the government’s announcement today that Acorn will receive funding from the UK Government.

She said: “After years of waiting, having missed out on ‘track 1’ funding in 2021, the announcement that Acorn has officially been given the greenlight is extremely positive news for the energy sector, the North-east and the UK’s energy transition.

“The Buchan project has the potential to accelerate the roll out of technology across the UK, driving forward net zero targets.

“In this region we have access to specialist skills, stemming from 50 years’ expertise in the oil and gas sector, not to mention two leading academic institutions to help facilitate collaboration across industry, government, and research as well as proximity to the infrastructure and facilities to allow industry to capture, transport and store CO2 emissions.”

“We welcome the creation of an expected 21,000 jobs as part of the Acorn project and we will continue to support all of our members and associates, who can play a vital role in developing CCS and hydrogen technologies to underpin these emerging markets.”

AREG is one of the original energy transition organisations and represents more than 280 member organisations, enabling net zero. www.aberdeenrenewables.com
