Blowout at CHK oilwell in Texas kills 1, injures 3

One worker was killed and three others were injured Wednesday during the blowout of a Chesapeake Energy (CHK) Central Texas oilwell.

All four were contractors working at a Chesapeake well site near Deanville, Texas, 28 miles southwest of Bryan, when flames burst from the wellhead at roughly 3:30 p.m. Central Time, said Chesapeake spokesman Gordon Pennoyer.

“At approximately 3:30 p.m. CT on Jan. 29, a fire was reported at a Chesapeake wellsite in Burleson County, Texas,” Pennoyer said. “One contractor has died as a result of the incident, and three others have been transported via helicopters to medical facilities in Austin and Houston. First responders and oilfield emergency response specialist Boots & Coots are on location. We will provide additional information as it becomes available.”

Pennoyer provided no further information other than the released statement.
