Brage Oilfield Enhanced with Operational Digitalisation Expansion

Offshore oil and gas digitalisation software provider and systems integrator, Eigen, and Wintershall Dea have extended their partnership to deploy the principal integration, visualisation and management platform for production engineers at the oil and gas company’s Brage oilfield.

As well as providing the visualisation and integration platform for real time data in the company’s Microsoft Azure cloud, the scope of Eigen’s Ingenuity offering has been expanded to offer further functionality for management of the field’s of operational data and enhanced understanding of operational status.

The fully cloud based system was originally configured to allow engineers to focus on priority workflows and tasks, find and understand information more quickly and effectively and initiate the corresponding action. The project scope has been expanded to enable additional functionality for oil & gas production forecast visualisation, weekly production planning, production monitoring vs plan and production surveillance, including:

  • Overview of latest well test results
  • Live Test Separator monitoring
  • Sand production, erosion and injection monitoring.
  • Chemical injection and dosage monitoring
  • Weekly offshore production plans

With the latest improvements to Ingenuity, it now functions beyond typical dashboarding tools as a full engineering management platform - allowing digitization of highly integrated workflows. This will eventually remove the need for multiple spreadsheets and free up engineers’ time. It also enables effective remote working as a cloud hosted system and can be accessed by anyone (with permissions) within the organisation.

In selecting Eigen, Wintershall chose Ingenuity as a specialist tool, which unlike Power BI dashboards, has been created specifically to solve the problems operations engineers encounter in the energy, chemicals and power industries. This allows engineers to focus on the field management engineering workflows, provide a tool kit for helping them to find information more quickly, understand it in context, make decisions and initiate action.

Peter Dabrowski, Digital Transformation – Subsurface Lead, Wintershall Dea, said, “This represents a significant step towards our Digital vision for Brage. By digitising the production surveillance processes, we have eliminated a lot of time spent with spreadsheets and integrated data from various operational data sources. Now our engineers have more time to focus on optimising production.

With this cloud based platform our engineers can continue to work remotely and it makes it easy to keep everyone in the company informed. This demonstrates Wintershall Dea’s commitment to investing in digitalisation as we continue to find ways to significantly enhance our operational practices."

Implemented in just 5 months time, Ingenuity was installed within a true cloud environment using the latest DevOps tools. The team also fulfilled the field management monitoring and visualisation requirements with minimal coding, and were able to interface with legacy systems and extract Excel sheet data that’s critical to the surveillance functions implemented.

Eigen’s CEO, Murray Callander, said, “This project provides another proof case that Eigen Ingenuity can be configured to comply with the most stringent requirements for mature oil & gas field management and surveillance. We are pleased to have been chosen as a tool for engineers, that’s built by engineers, with the flexibility to be configured for compliance with field engineer needs.”

Eigen’s Ingenuity offering is available now to all it’s clients, and allows:

  • Search across systems
  • User configurable visualisation and calculations
  • Simple drag and drop UI
  • Event detection and alerting
  • Semantic model giving fast access to related information from other systems
  • Mobile apps
  • Automated data capture for meetings and reports
  • Digital working environment
  • Publishing to common displays
  • Real time risk visualisation

Peter Kronberger, Reservoir Engineer and Digitalisation Catalyst, concludes, “I used to have to be in the office to access production data, but now I can easily do it from home. This possibility itself has made such a big difference to my ability to work remotely.”
