Cegal and Qumulo partner for innovative oil and gas technologies

Delivers 3 times faster subsurface data processing for oil and gas companies at half the IT cost

Cegal and Qumulo partners for technology innovation in the oil and gas sector. The result is accelerated subsurface data processing up to three times faster than alternative cloud or on-premises solutions and cost reductions between 20% and 50%.

SEATTLE, US, and STAVANGER, NORWAY—April 7, 2025Cegal, a global tech powerhouse specializing in energy, and Qumulo, the creator of the world’s most advanced file and unstructured data storage system, today announced a technology partnership. Under the agreement, Qumulo and Cegal will offer unparalleled performance and economic value by integrating distributed file systems with Cegal’s unique subsurface Data Management and Cetegra capabilities.

Cegal Chief Technology Officer John Henrik Andersen says, “Cegal is known for delivering unparalleled value for customers with energy workflows in Microsoft Azure and private clouds, especially with Cegal Cetegra. Now, integrated with the full suite of Qumulo’s cloud native services, optimized for oil and gas workloads, our customers will benefit from faster elastic performance and better economics, significantly reducing the time to decisions and increasing value.”

Qumulo and Cegal have built this partnership around Cegal’s ability to integrate and operate Qumulo’s innovative cloud native architecture across the entire portfolio of Qumulo’s file service platform, including Cloud Native Qumulo, Azure Native Qumulo, and Cloud Data Fabric.

Three times faster at half the price

Qumulo President and CEO, Doug Gourlay, adds, “Qumulo continues to lead file system innovation. Cegal now offers Qumulo’s Cloud Native products optimized for oil and gas workflows. With this technology, Qumulo and Cegal can offer up to three times the performance of competitive products in the cloud while delivering improved economics. Cegal’s expertise and technology integrations in petrotechnical applications enhance this value for our mutual Energy Sector customers.”

Using the Qumulo Cloud Native Architecture, energy sector customers can efficiently operate high-performance desktop and high-performance compute workloads. Applications like Petrel*, DecisionSpace**, ArcGIS***, and dozens of others perform operations faster with data stored in the Qumulo file systems. Cegal can also deliver expert guidance to craft energy sector customers’ cloud architecture for these high-value data workflows, provide integrations, and help customers optimize their costs as their needs change.

The Qumulo cloud-native architecture uses fast NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory express) and Managed Disks, as well as cost-effective object storage, and supports multiple file protocols simultaneously. Qumulo Predictive Caching detects the user’s workflow, predicts what files are required by the workload next, and prefetches data into a cache that reduces file system latency and increases application performance.

Early collaborations have shown that customers can save between 20% and 50% on the total cost of ownership for their holistic file storage and performance environment by switching their existing cloud or on-premises solution to one designed by Cegal and Qumulo.
