While many organisations continue to promote individuals on technical competence; this approach can have unintended and detrimental effects. Poor communication, reduced trust, disengagement and elevated risk exposure are common outcomes when leaders lack the interpersonal and behavioural skills required to lead effectively.
Integrity HSE’s leadership programmes address this imbalance by defining Emotional Intelligence as a core leadership competency. Through structured training and development, organisations are supported to identify the soft skills they value most, such as self-awareness, empathy, decision-making and adaptive communication, and assign clear measurement criteria against which behaviours can be assessed and developed.
This approach enables organisations to move beyond subjective assessments of “good leadership” and toward a more consistent, measurable and defensible model of capability. These leadership training and development programmes, including intensive and bespoke leadership coaching and mentoring, are already being delivered by Integrity HSE across Scotland, from Aberdeen to Glasgow, with consistently positive feedback.
Integrity HSE’s leadership training and development activity is led by Rob Diver, Head of Risk & Resilience. Rob brings extensive operational leadership experience, having led military, police and NATO teams worldwide in high-pressure, high-hazard environments. His practical insight ensures that Emotional Intelligence is not treated as an abstract concept, but as a tangible leadership skill set directly applicable to operational reality.
By embedding Emotional Intelligence as a cornerstone of leadership development, Integrity HSE is supporting organisations to build leaders who are not only technically capable, but also equipped to lead people effectively in demanding environments.
