Norwegian energy major Equinor ASA said Tuesday that its Empire Offshore Wind joint venture with BP PLC has awarded a contract to Maersk Supply Service for charter of its newbuild wind installation vessel.
The vessel is expected to be ready for operation in the middle of this decade, and together with barges and tugs operated by Kirby Offshore Wind, will be used for the installation of the project's Vestas Wind Systems AS turbines, it added.
Financial terms of the contract weren't disclosed.
The Empire Wind lease area is located 15-30 miles southeast of Long Island, N.Y., and when completed, Empire Wind 1 and 2 will power more than 1 million New York homes, it said.
