Erawin field development produces first oil in Libya

The Erawin oilfield is thought to hold some of the largest reserves in Africa.

Erawin oilfield development in Libya has reached a key milestone with the successful production of first oil, marking a new phase in the country’s oil and gas production efforts.

Petrofac is at the forefront of this development to enhance the critical infrastructure, ensure safety and security of operations and increase production capacity at the field.

The Erawin oilfield, reputed to hold some of the largest reserves in Africa, is located in the south-west of the country.

In 2021, Petrofac secured a contract valued at $100m from Zallaf Libya Oil & Gas Exploration and Production Company to engineer, procure, construct and commission surface facilities at the field.

The project’s scope includes the construction of well pads, flowlines and a 100km pipeline to transport crude oil to the El Sharara oilfield.

Additional responsibilities include building a control room, substation and telecommunications system at El Sharara.

Petrofac project director Rami Haydar said: “This achievement is testament to the resilience of our team in overcoming the challenges of fast-tracking a project in a new country. Operating from multiple locations, the team successfully executed a hybrid model while maintaining strict safety and security standards.”

Also in October 2024, Petrofac secured a contract with Marathon Oil in Equatorial Guinea, expanding its African presence.

The master service agreement (MSA) will see Petrofac providing engineering support and technical authority to ensure operational safety and excellence across key assets.

This agreement strengthens Petrofac’s ongoing relationship with Marathon Oil, having previously supported the company’s North Sea assets.

The MSA will cover both onshore and offshore facilities including the Alba gas plant and five offshore steel jacket facilities in the Alba Field.
