How Protex Systems can help companies install the right fire and gas detection systems with Advanced Mapping Technology

Protex Systems has just celebrated its tenth anniversary. Founded by David Orr, the independent business has experienced substantial growth.

A graduate of Teesside University (specialising in Instrumentation and Control) and with an MBA from the University of Strathclyde, David has decades of experience in managing companies both internationally and in the UK and he has over 20 years’ experience of fire and gas products, field support services and design work.

In addition to supplying products, the business also offers a design service called Fire and Gas Mapping. In 2015, David worked on a two-year KTP (Knowledge Transfer Project) with Teesside University to develop software that is now used to support many of the leading energy and oil and gas companies to design and develop their fire and gas detection strategies helping to support the safety of their personnel and protect their assets.

In 2018, David was part of a working group that developed a new British standard for what is known as Fire and Gas Mapping, BS 60080:2020 Explosive and toxic atmospheres — Hazard detection mapping was developed over a two-year period and was published in 2020.

David said: “The new standard encourages a wider range of sectors other than oil and gas to use Mapping software to verify their existing detection or the protection are about to install. We offer the most advanced safety equipment available today. We work with countless businesses from Distilleries to University Laboratories as well as the Oil and Gas sector and support their efforts to focus on personnel and workplace safety.

“Undetected gas leaks in production plants and storage facilities can have devastating consequences, including accidental yet catastrophic explosions, fires, loss of life and worker health issues. These effects can potentially extend to nearby communities, damaging the environment and company reputations along with it.

“Effective, reliable gas detection systems are an essential layer of protection designed to reduce risk and protect all stakeholders. A number of detection technologies exist all designed to suit a specific wide range of applications. To help the businesses better address various gas detection concerns especially in wide areas, open path technology enhances the overall safety performance of the gas detection system.

David added: “If you are looking for a complex integrated addressable / PLC based Fire and Gas systems or a simple card based design our engineers are available to meet you to discuss your specific targets.

“We want our customers to benefit from our experience, expertise and independence. The depth of fire and gas knowledge and our ability to apply a diverse range of technologies has established Protex Systems as a leader in providing the right solution, whatever the requirement.

“We can provide a solution in the most challenging situations, whether using an ‘out of the box’ solution or a bespoke designed system. We always fully support our customers by ensuring comprehensive engineering and support capability throughout the solution providing process and over the lifetime of the equipment.’’
