Vaar Energi having success with multiple wells on Norway’s Goliat ridge
The operator of the Goliat oilfield in Norway’s Barents Sea has drilled another successful appraisal well in a new play at the field.
The operator Vaar Energi has already made three consecutive discoveries along the new play, the Goliat ridge — Countach, Countach appraisal and Zagato.
In total, the three discoveries contain a gross estimated recoverable resource with a high case of 100 million barrels of oil equivalent.
The latest success is an appraisal on the Zagato discovery, which has found an estimated gross recoverable resource of 3 million barrels of oil equivalent, Vaar said.
The Norwegian Offshore Directorate said the estimated resource was between 18 million and 64 million boe.
Another appraisal well is planned in the fourth quarter called Goliat North followed followed by a sidetrack and well test of the Zagato South appraisal.
The latest well, 7122/8-4 S, was drilled in Block PL 229 just 10 kilometres north of the Goliat field using the semi-submersible rig COSL Prospector.
The well hit an 11-metre oil column in the Tubaen Formation in the Realgrunnen subgroup with good reservoir quality. The oil-water contact was found 1523 metres below sea level.
Water depth at the site is 406 metres, and the well has been permanently plugged and abandoned.
Vaar said a tie-back of the Goliat Ridge discoveries to the nearby Goliat FPSO is being evaluated.
The partners in the licence are Vaar on 65% and Equinor on 35%.
