Bergen, Norway — 9 December 2024 — In a pioneering pilot project, Terravera Foundation, a leading partner in third-party documentation of sustainability data, has demonstrated that it is possible to deliver both environmental and commercial gains in the oil and gas service sector by making strategic changes to the production process. This industry-first project was undertaken in partnership with Norclamp, a specialist in standardized clamps, and ClimateAdvisor.
The project was led by the Terravera modelling team. By collecting and verifying specific data and building a digital model for value chain analysis, Terravera enables a detailed overview of the environmental impact across each stage of production and simulates potential improvements, the goal was to identify the actual emissions in the production process of the Norclamp Split Clamp.
The key finding from the research was that 81% of total emissions identified came from steel production. This spurred a shift in supplier strategy and production methods by Norclamp. As a result of these changes, the following results have been achieved so far:
- 26% reduction in steel emissions: Changes in steel sourcing, production, and optimized material usage achieved a 26% reduction in emissions related to steel.
- 27% reduction in cost: The strategic adjustments led to substantial cost savings, underscoring the viability of integrating sustainability with commercial value.
The significant results were independently verified by Terravera’s research and modelling team. By analysing the production process, the project demonstrates how verified emissions data can guide strategies that support both environmental sustainability and the sustainable use of materials. These improvements led to reductions in emissions and costs for Norclamp.
“As Norclamp enters a structured growth phase, we wanted to prioritise sustainability and gain a clear understanding of where our operations stood from a sustainability perspective. We are proud to say that the results have far exceeded our expectations and have given us a clear roadmap for embedding sustainability even further into our processes and operations,” said Adrian Gamman, Chairman of the Board at Norclamp.
Elisabeth Kjerstad Bøe, CEO of Terravera Foundation, echoed this sentiment: “This project is a testament to Terravera’s commitment to empower data driven sustainability decisions for organisations. Together with Norclamp we have demonstrated how specific, verified data is crucial to assess the environmental and commercial value of strategic decisions.
Kristin Hidle Vinje, ClimateAdvisor AS, explained their role in linking verified data with financial metrics to drive results: “Connecting verified emissions data to financial data ensures that sustainability efforts also bring commercial benefits and support strategic decision-making. The project goes beyond the scope of the new environmental reporting standards set to come into force in 2025. Demonstrating Norclamp’s commitment to sustainability, this pilot project means that Norclamp is already validating its value chain two years ahead of the requirements for a company of its size”.
