OGV Energy launch “OGV Inspire” training platform for the Energy sector

Education and continuous professional development should be the foundations from which every successful industry develops, however as most professionals working in the Energy sector today will testify, personal development is often difficult to achieve when hindered by the operational challenges of day to day business.

OPITO’s “Skills Landscape 2019 – 2025 report”, part of the “Workforce Dynamics” series which was conducted in partnership with Robert Gordon University, has revealed that advances in technology, internationalisation and the transition to a lower carbon economy are accelerating the changing skills demands in the Energy sector.

One of the key findings from this report states that there is a requirement to upskill the sectors leadership and management functions to ensure informed decision-making is being made with respect to technology adoption and change management.

As a leading engagement platform for the Energy sector, OGV Energy have recently partnered with Matthew Laskaj, Managing Director of Project Engineering Management and Chair of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) in Aberdeen to create “OGV Inspire” and address this educational requirement.

Matthew is a Fellow and Chartered Mechanical Engineer and passionate believer in continuous professional development. Matthew and his team have delivered a broad range of senior management training courses throughout the UK to companies within the Energy sector working with IMechE at training events and conferences as well as lecturing at various academic institutions and local schools throughout Aberdeenshire.

“OGV Inspire” aims to become a searchable training directory located on OGV Energy’s homepage for both online and personally delivered training courses for the Energy sector, providing modular courses across a broad range of disciplines that will include the gap in learning for harnessing new technologies.

Matthew said: “We are delighted to be partnering with a progressive company like OGV Energy and helping to address the skills shortage in the Energy sector by doing something we are deeply passionate about and delivering it in a way which is accessible to everyone. The advantage of partnering with OGV Energy provides our business with access to a huge global audience who all work within the market sector that we are servicing”.

Matthew continued: “Our aim to differentiate ourselves will be to collaborate with some of OGV Energy’s clients in order to produce really engaging courses with real life examples and case studies of the subject matter under discussion. For example, if I was delivering a course on harnessing artificial intelligence, I can speak to at least 5 companies that work with OGV Energy to provide examples, videos and materials to bring the course to life. Eventually we will then develop online courses using video to ensure that there are no geographical boundaries to access the training!”

Whilst the “OGV Inspire” brand will deliver face to face training courses through Matthew’s company, Project Engineering Management, the platform “OGV Inspire” itself will also host a multitude of other online training courses for the Energy sector which will be delivered by other training providers.

Dan Hyland – Operations Director for OGV Energy commented: “ OGV Energy was created primarily to help the whole of the Energy sector improve the way in which it communicates with itself and to help it address any shortfalls for the good of all the professionals working in it.  We have been seeking to do something in the training space for some time now, in order to address the skills shortfall identified by OPITO’s “Skills Landscape report”, so we are delighted to be able to use our platform to create a searchable training database that will benefit the whole industry as we all look to develop our knowledge and understanding of new technologies within the sector.”

“Whilst we will be creating some of the courses ourselves, with the help of Matthew and “Project Engineering Management Ltd”, the idea is that we are using our platform to bring a searchable training directory to the global Energy industry, using a wide variety of training providers that both companies and individuals can benefit from at an affordable price.”

After conducting research, Matthew has initially identified 10 courses that he feels there is a market requirement for, including several digitalisation courses that he believes will help the sector to understand and harness new technologies and improve business performance and his team will deliver these in person to the UK market.

These include:

  • Digital transformation in the Energy industry
  • Introduction to Digitalisation and Data Utilisation
  • Project Management Fundamentals
  • Maintenance Optimisation
  • Asset Management
  • Risk Based & Reliability Centred Maintenance
  • Introduction to Additive Manufacturing
  • Effective Design Process and Review for Manufacturability, Supply Chain and beyond
  • Managing an engineering project
  • Root cause analysis and failure investigation

“OGV Inspire” have already started speaking to other training companies who wish to promote their courses and have been delighted with the response it has received by industry so far.

Matthew will be launching “OGV Inspire” at the OGV Energy Pavilion on September 3rd at SPE Offshore Europe, so please come along if you are interested in finding out how you or your company can benefit!
