Perenco Spuds Appraisal Well Offshore Gabon

Perenco Oil & Gas Gabon (POGG) has spudded an appraisal well in the vicinity of the Hylia South West discovery, offshore Gabon.

The company said in a media release that the appraisal well is targeting the NTO reservoir and the lower, highly promising Madiela carbonate reservoir.

This field was discovered in December 2022 through the exploration well HYSM-1 when a 131 feet (40 meters) net oil-bearing column was proved in the Ntchengue Ocean (NTO) reservoir, as well as a further column in the Madiela reservoir, it said. The well is being drilled by Dixstone’s BANBA jack-up rig in a campaign expected to last 30 days.

The Hylia South West field is now producing 6,000 barrels of oil per day from the HYSM-01 well, a material increase since the start of production in October 2023, less than one year after the discovery, Perenco said.

“The appraisal drilling is important in determining the full potential of this area after the recent exploration success at Hylia South West. It is designed to further inform our understanding of both the NTO and Madiela resevoirs, and to narrow our estimate of oil resources in place, presently estimated at between 20 and 100+ million barrels”, Adrien Broche, General Manager of POGG, said.

In another company development, Perenco will from March see a change at the helm as Armel Simondin takes over as the new CEO of Perenco SA. Simondin has extensive experience in the oil and gas industry having spent the first part of his career with Total Energies before joining Perenco in 2011, Perenco said. His latest position within Perenco has been general manager of Perenco Cameroon, before which he served as the group’s drilling manager.

Simondin will take over Benoit de la Fouchardiere, who spent the last eight years growing and developing the company, Perenco said. Benoit de la Fouchardiere will take over the lead at Dixstone, a Perenco affiliate, and will also join the board of Perenco Group.
