Petronas begins production at FLNG platform offshore Malaysia

Petronas has commenced the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) production from its Satu FLNG facility at the Kebabangan cluster field 90km offshore Sabah, East Malaysia.

The Petronas Floating LNG Satu (PFLNG Satu) was relocated to the Kebabangan field after producing LNG from the Kanowit field, offshore Sarawak.

PFLNG Satu can operate in water depths ranging from 70m to 200m. The platform has a processing capacity of 1.2 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) and is intended to support the company’s global LNG portfolio.

First gas was fed into the FLNG from the Kebabangan field earlier in May via a 5km flexible pipeline. In preparation for the production of the first LNG drop, several start-up activities were taken up including the cooling down of natural gas.

Petronas LNG Asset vice-president Zakaria Kasah said: “This achievement showcases our focused execution and close collaboration efforts, within Petronas as well as externally with the State government and regulatory bodies. We not only prove our concept of relocatable floating LNG facility, but we have also seamlessly achieved the first LNG drop in just three days after first gas in.

“This is indeed another proud moment and a great milestone for Petronas and the floating LNG industry.”

The Kebabangan field is operated by Kebabangan Petroleum Operating Company (KPOC), a joint-venture between Petronas Carigali, ConocoPhillips and Shell. Gas production from the field began in 2014. The partners expect to achieve first LNG cargo delivery in June.
