The Largest Producers of Wind Power, by Country

Global wind power installations reached a new high in 2023, increasing renewable energy’s share of total power generation to 30%.

China continues to be the driving force behind wind power expansion, accounting for nearly 66% of global capacity additions last year. Major wind farms in regions like Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang rank among the largest in the world. By 2030, China aims to triple its number of utility-scale wind and solar farms, backed by significant government investments across a broad range of renewable energy initiatives.

This graphic highlights the top 15 countries by total installed wind turbine capacity, based on data from the Energy Institute’s Statistical Review of World Energy 2024 report.

The World’s Leading Countries in Wind Capacity

Here are the countries with the highest wind turbine capacity as of 2023:

China leads the world in wind energy, boasting a wind turbine capacity of 441,895 megawatts—nearly three times that of the U.S., which ranks second.

China also saw some of the highest growth rates in wind turbine installations in the past decade, second only to Brazil, where Chinese energy companies are actively expanding their presence. Since 2013, Brazil’s wind turbine capacity has grown 29.5% on average annually, with further expansion projected for the future, supported by government policies encouraging foreign investment in the power sector.

In the U.S., wind capacity has more than doubled in the past decade, with Texas, Iowa, and Oklahoma leading the charge. Notably, six U.S. states now generate over a third of their electricity from wind. Since 2019, wind has become the country’s largest source of renewable energy, with its biggest wind farm covering 100,000 acres.

Globally, wind energy continues to see strong growth, particularly in Europe, where countries like Germany, Spain, the UK, France, and Sweden are leading producers.
