A leading specialist in decommissioning waste has announced the completion of a major project at its new facility Shetland.
Aberdeen-based Phoenix Decom recently processed 13.5km (740 tonnes) of subsea mooring rope at its 2,400m² quayside facility in Lerwick, utilising a new material handler and a mobile shear unit which formed a significant portion of the £1 million investment in the site. The scope of work saw a DOF vessel make four visits to Lerwick over a 16-day period.
Another project, involving three port calls and up to 500 tonnes of material, is scheduled for September and will see concrete mattresses, grout and steelwork recycled in Lerwick.
Commenting on news, Phoenix Decom’s Craig Smith said: “The local supply chain, and particularly the availability of skilled labour, was instrumental in the delivery of this project and its success is already opening up discussions with existing and prospective clients to grow the possibilities.
“The imminent second project, and many positive conversations we are having, underline that the location is pivotal in ensuring we are exactly where our clients need us to be, and we look forward to building on this in the future.”
As well as an office in Aberdeen’s Bridge of Don and the Shetland base, Phoenix Decom has an operational site in Dyce and licenced facilities at both Peterhead and Port of Aberdeen. Between them, they have managed more than 40,000 tonnes of reused and recycled materials since the company’s inception. The recently opened base in Lerwick is expected to play a central role in fulfilling the company’s future growth aspirations and will create local jobs in parallel with growing demand for services at the location.
