Sparrows secures crane management contract from UKCS operator

UK-based Sparrows Group has received a contract from an undisclosed ‘major’ UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) operator to provide crane management services for its operating assets in the North Sea.

Under the contract, worth approximately £50m ($60m), Sparrows will be responsible for the delivery of crane operations and maintenance services for ten offshore oil and gas assets.

The five-year contract has two-year extension options.

Sparrows CEO Stewart Mitchell said: “This new five-year contract is in addition to the inspection services work, which we were awarded by the operator two years ago, demonstrating the high-quality service we have delivered to ensure safe and efficient operations.

“Although we have been diversifying into the renewables and onshore industrial markets in recent years, the North Sea remains a core area in the business, so we’re pleased to continue working with the operator across these assets.”

The engineering and maintenance services firm, which has held the contract since 2018, will continue to provide operation, maintenance, and engineering services to ensure the reliability and safety of 38 cranes.

The scope of the contract includes the development and implementation of planned maintenance routines, in addition to carrying out planning and risk assessments for all lifting operations.

Sparrows plans to undertake all onshore support work from its headquarters in Aberdeen, Scotland. This includes technical and safety audits, and repair and renovation work when required.

Earlier this year, Sparrows was selected by Serica Energy for crane operations and maintenance services on the Bruce platform in the UK North Sea.

The scope of work included onshore engineering, resident focal points, and operations and maintenance services including engineering and technical support on site, refurbishment, and repairs. It also included lifting equipment inspection.
