Stem challenge 2024
Teenage engineers from across the UK recently gathered for Global Underwater Hub’s 2024 STEM Challenge competition. A team of six pupils from Millburn Academy in Inverness emerged victorious, lifting the title after a fierce competition.
J+S Subsea was one of the sponsors of this nationwide event, which aims to inspire the next generation to pursue careers in engineering. The competition saw young participants from schools in York, Glasgow, Inverness, Manchester, Somerset, and West Sussex converge in Aberdeen for the final round last month.
The initiative challenged 13 and 14-year-old students to test their skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by designing, building, programming, and marketing a wheeled model ROV (remotely operated vehicle) using LEGO SPIKE sets.
Organised by Global Underwater Hub with the support of educational charity The Smallpeice Trust, the STEM Challenge provides a platform for school pupils to apply their STEM knowledge and skills while exploring future career possibilities. The programme highlights the wide array of job opportunities within the underwater industry.
