Techfest to celebrate 30th anniversary with roar-some dinosaur show

Dinosaur aficionado brings new show to Aberdeen

Evolutionary biologist, Professor Ben Garrod, will be bringing his new show “EXTINCT: The Story of Life on Earth” to Aberdeen as part of TechFest's 30th anniversary on Saturday, July 22 at the university of Aberdeen’s Arts Lecture Theatre

The family friendly show accompanies his “Extinct” book series, that aims to help everyone understand whether extinction is always a bad thing, how it affects those who survive these catastrophic events – and what each of us can do now to tackle the current threats to life on Earth.

Professor Garrod is best known for his award-winning BBC4 series “Secrets of Bones” in 2014. He also starred in “Attenborough and the Giant Dinosaur” in 2016, “The Day the Dinosaurs Died” in 2017 and “Baby Chimp Rescue” in 2020.

Speaking about his return to TechFest, Ben said: “TechFest is such a fun, inspiring and buzzing series of events – with so many great events and even greater audiences, I’m looking forward to heading back to show how understanding the post might just help us in the future.”

“It’s an exciting time for TechFest as we not only are celebrating our 30th anniversary but we are delighted to welcome back Professor Garrod after he performed ‘So You Think You Know About Dinosaurs’ in 2019!'” said Dr Martha Gavan, deputy managing director at TechFest.

“Shows like these, that make science fun and accessible, are some of the best ways for young people – and adults – to discover a love of STEM.”

Ben commented “when I was young, I was told I couldn’t do science, but science is for everyone! Whether you are rich or poor, black or white, boy or girl, it doesn’t matter. If you like science you’re already a scientist!”

TechFest is an Aberdeen-based charity which aims to engage young people in the four main STEM subjects and encourage them to go on to follow a career which uses these skills by demonstrating that they are both fun and relevant in day-to-day life.
