Survey will investigate 21 exploration blocks in Pelotas basin
Norway’s TGS will start a multi-client seismic campaign in the Pelotas basin of southern Brazil, with a vessel due to mobilise this quarter.
The Oslo-listed energy data specialist said on Monday the Pelotas Norte Phase I survey will span about 14,800 square kilometres across 21 exploration blocks, most of which are in un-held acreage expected to feature in future bid rounds.
TGS said the project is designed to provide operators with critical 3D data to evaluate plays in a basin that has attracted interest from international oil companies, due to its geological similarities with the proven hydrocarbon systems of West Africa. These include organic-rich intervals of Albian, Turonian and Paleocene ages.
A Ramform Titan-class vessel will carry out the acquisition. The unit will be mobilised in the fourth quarter, with operations running into the third quarter of 2026.
“This survey significantly expands our seismic coverage and will help clients better understand the basin’s geological structures and derisk future exploration,” TGS chief executive Kristian Johansen said.
“Exploration activity in the Pelotas Norte Basin is accelerating.”
The campaign follows two large multi-client surveys announced earlier this year in Brazil’s Equatorial Margin. With Pelotas Norte Phase I, three Ramform Titan-class vessels will be operating offshore Brazil through the end of 2025 and into 2026.
TGS did not disclose the clients for the survey.
