The importance of helping the UK to tackle climate change has been highlighted by the North Sea oil and gas regulator.

A report carried out by the Oil and Gas Authority features ways to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2050. The report suggests infrastructure and skills promoted by sector players can boost the official drive to reach Net Zero.

The oil and gas industry are under mass amounts of pressure due to environmental campaigners calling for production to be stopped. The pressure lies in the industry justifying its existence amid the call out from climate change activists, suggests the regulator.

However, the Oil and Gas Authority Chief Executive said, “oil and gas will remain an important part of the UK energy mix for years”. The Oil and Gas Authority estimates the making of a strong domestic industry will help to lessen the UK’s dependence on imports of oil. It is hoped the UK will form as a key part of the future energy sector.

The Oil and Gas Authority said, “the report finds that multiple offshore integration concepts are technically feasible and would be viable options for helping to lower the oil and gas industry’s carbon footprint and decarbonising the UK economy”.

The report suggests multiple ways of lowering carbon emissions to zero before 2050. Some features of the report are:

  • Produce hydrogen, a low carbon energy source, using oil and gas platforms and pipelines.
  • Gas-to-wire technology, to produce electricity from gas offshore with output transferred using cables for windfarms.
  • Green energy from windfarms, can be used to power all oil and gas platforms.
