Two North-east businesses are helping to shape the next generation of engineers through an innovative project with Peterhead Academy.
The Peterhead Academy Learning Partnership, created in collaboration with Aberdeenshire Council, gives pupils hands-on experience in engineering and other business sectors by involving them directly in projects with local firms.
Over the next eight weeks, 10 pupils from Peterhead Academy will spend two hours a week at South View, Dales Industrial Estate in Peterhead, where they will work with teams from innovative engineering business JBS and sister firm AM Campbell Electricians.
Their goal: to build a fully operational screw conveyor under the guidance of industry professionals, gaining practical skills and insight into the engineering process from start to finish. Used in industry, a screw conveyor is a mechanical device that moves materials through a tube or trough using a rotating helical screw blade.
Jo McIntosh, Sales & Marketing Director at JBS, said: “This project lets pupils create something real, providing insight into how engineering projects develop from concept to completion. Many of our team are former Peterhead Academy pupils, and they’re excited to share their knowledge and experience with pupils.”
The programme is designed to inspire future careers by immersing students in projects. A teacher accompanies the pupils during their site visits.
Gavin Fraser, Director at AM Campbell Electricians, said: “It’s a meaningful investment. Pupils get a look at how projects come together practically and commercially. It’s great to contribute to the Peterhead Academy programme.”
This project will conclude with a ‘big switch-on’ event, where parents and invited guests will celebrate the pupils’ achievements.
