UK well equipped to face energy revolution, OGUK Sustainability Director says

 

Much like the Industrial Revolution of the 1800s, the UK can once again lead a new revolution in energy, OGUK Sustainability Director Mike Tholen has said.

Speaking on the second day of OGUK’s Industry Conference, Mr Tholen said:

“We were the first to experience the Industrial Revolution and now the UK faces a new revolution, an energy revolution that we are well equipped to face. The challenge – retaining our industrial strengths as an economy whilst cutting our carbon emissions, affordably and at pace.

“We are making good progress and work has not stopped despite the impact of Covid-19. Building on our North Sea experience, combining innovation, technology and investment and the people and skills of our supply chain speaks to an exciting future, a low carbon future and yes indeed a zero-carbon future.”

The second day of the conference was entitled Decarbonising the UK Economy. A variety of industry experts gave their insight on the contribution that the UK oil and gas industry’s contribution to dramatically cutting carbon emissions. to hit the UK’s target of net zero emissions by 2050, whilst supporting jobs and the economy.

These expert sessions included Industrial Decarbonisation Strategy by Sam White, Deputy Director of Industrial Decarbonisation at BEIS. Arne Gürtner, Senior Vice President UK & Ireland Offshore at Equinor delivered a session on Equinor’s Decarbonisation Ambitions and Achievements in the UK. There was also a session on Establishing a Hydrogen Price Index, by Bert den Ouden, Project Director, Hydrogen Exchange Definition Project. Finally there was a panel session which also included Nigel Jenvey (Baker Hughes) and David Henderson (PX Group).
