Jenni Davidson, Cased Hole Analyst, READ Cased Hole

What was your first job in the industry?

I started my oil and gas career at READ in 2013 as a junior well integrity analyst. Joining the industry as a trainee has been a great way to learn on the job. Over the last five years, I have been able to develop my analytical skills and have worked across a variety of really interesting projects for customers worldwide. I am now a cased hole analyst – this involves interpreting data from many different downhole logging tools which helps support customers with their production logging, well integrity and reservoir evaluation activities.

Why did you choose to work in Oil and Gas?

After graduating from Aberdeen University with a BSc in Chemistry, I didn’t really have a clear idea of what I wanted to do. A chemistry degree can open up several different career paths and I was interested in the energy and pharmaceuticals industries, as well as teaching. However, there were elements of my course that were specific to oil and gas which I really enjoyed. I was able to see how my skills and education could be a good fit with the industry and was delighted to get the opportunity to join READ.

What personal attributes have helped you progress in your career?

Maths was always one of my strong points all through school and university, and this is definitely beneficial in my current role. I need to produce extremely detailed and accurate data reports, often to be completed in a matter of hours. I also enjoy interacting with our customers which is useful when I present interpretation findings to them.

What has been the high point of your career so far?

Getting the opportunity to work overseas in our Doha office was a brilliant experience. I travelled there regularly between 2016-2017 to support a major operator. This customer had been recording downhole data over a 10-year period and I was tasked with re-processing the data to provide an effective well history log they could use for future monitoring purposes and decision making. This was my first time in the Middle East and a fantastic way to learn all about the local area and culture.

Have you had to face any challenges?

One of READ’s strengths is the wide range of technologies it can deploy downhole for production logging and integrity evaluation purposes. But that presented me with the challenge of having to become competent in each individual technology. I’ve been given fantastic support and mentoring to help me get to grips with the logging tools, and five years in, I love the variation.

Is there anything you would like to see change in the Oil and Gas sector?

Women comprise only about one-fifth of the oil and gas industry’s workforce, far lower than many other major sectors. I would like see more women considering a career in oil and gas and having the same opportunities I have had.

What advice would you give to other woman looking to get in to the industry?

Don’t be put off considering a career in oil and gas if your education or degree isn’t exactly related to the industry. Like me, there is the opportunity to learn on the job, and there are some excellent training facilities that can help you gain the practical experience you need to work in oil and gas. Plus, employers look at more than your qualifications alone, so showing that you are enthusiastic, hard-working, a team player and passionate about learning new skills can stand you in good stead.
