Great to catch up with Isla Robb, Director of Offshore Renewables at ETZ, on day one of a busy All-Energy Glasgow! ☀️ Isla shared the vibrant atmosphere of the event, noting the packed battery storage session and positive sentiments around Great British Energy and the UK’s potential, particularly for Scotland, in floating offshore wind.
We discussed the familiar “jam tomorrow” narrative, and while Isla acknowledged the future scale of projects, she emphasized that projects are happening now. She highlighted the recent challenging times for the Northeast of Scotland, with redundancies in some organizations, underscoring the urgent need for more offshore wind projects in the water and the significant opportunity presented by grid upgrades (transmission). Isla also stressed the continued importance of the oil and gas sector while the demand remains, advocating for a balanced approach to the energy transition.
In her first five months as Director, Isla has been focused on understanding the significant challenges faced by large companies in the Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire region, emphasizing the need for continued support to help them stay, grow, and transition into clean energy. Facilitating communication between these companies and the government is also a key priority.
Looking ahead, ETZ has some exciting developments on the horizon! Later this year will see the opening of their Energy Works building for innovative companies, co-located with the National Manufacturing Institute of Scotland. Adjacent to this will be their skills hub, in partnership with North East College Scotland (NESCol), providing crucial skills in welding, electrical engineering, and more. ETZ is also working closely with South Harbour and the port to ensure sites are ready for inward investors, recognizing the need for proactive infrastructure development.
