AFBE-UK Scotland to host latest Transition event in Glasgow to help students and graduates

Diversity and inclusion organisation AFBE-UK Scotland is holding a careers workshop to help students and recent graduates prepare for the world of work.

The Aberdeen-based group is holding the face-to-face event on Friday, October 7 [2022] from 9am to 5pm in Glasgow at the Mott MacDonald office on St Vincent Street.

The workshop will showcase two companies across the construction and engineering sectors with Mott MacDonald and Balfour Beatty taking part – two global leaders across the built environment sector.

Attendees will have the opportunity to listen to leading professionals from both companies and the event will be hosted by AFBE-UK Scotland’s Transition coordinator, Ibim Diri.

Speakers include Norrie Westbrook, general manager of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland at Mott Macdonald and Hector Macaulay MBE, managing director of Scotland and Ireland at Balfour Beatty.

Young people will receive advice on promoting themselves online; how to draw out strengths and experiences to set them apart from others and gain insight into the recruitment process and how employers choose their candidates.

The event will also involve a series of mock interview sessions with Mott MacDonald and Balfour Beatty staff members, where attendees will get the opportunity to experience an interview with a UK-based construction and engineering company.

The workshop is part of a series of AFBE-UK Scotland events aimed at bridging the gap between academia and industry for young people, particularly those from under-represented backgrounds looking to pursue a career in the science, engineering, technology and mathematics (STEM) sectors.

Transition has helped thousands of attendees develop their career skills since launching in 2012. Events have been held in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Ibim Diri, Transition coordinator at AFBE-UK Scotland, said: “We are excited to be hosting another one of our Transition events in Glasgow and are thrilled that Mott MacDonald and Balfour Beatty are involved.

“We hope those in attendance find it useful and we look forward to hearing of the opportunities and success stories that will arise for young people as a result of this event.”

Registration to the event is free, however, places are limited: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/transition-career-event-by-mott-macdonald-balfour-beatty-afbe-uk-tickets-418634185117

AFBE-UK Scotland provides mentoring programmes to support young people with their STEM careers. As well as Transition, this includes its schools programme NextGen, where industry leaders and professionals give advice to pupils through practical events and Real Projects, where industry professionals share their knowledge and expertise. AFBE-UK Scotland is part of AFBE-UK, which is based in London.
