ONE-Dyas Advances Gas Project in North Sea

ONE-Dyas B.V. has secured permits for the development of the N05-A gas field and surrounding prospects in the German part of the North Sea.

After being granted permits by the Das Landesamt für Bergbau, Energie und Geologie (LBEG), part of the Lower Saxony Ministry for Economy, Transport, Construction and Digitalization, ONE-Dyas now has all approvals in Germany and the Netherlands for the Dutch-German energy project.

The N05-A platform is located in the Netherlands, approximately 0.93 miles (1.5 kilometers) from German waters. The platform location is about 12.4 miles (20 kilometers) north of the islands of Borkum, Rottumerplaat and Schiermonnikoog.

The license application was accompanied by a thorough and comprehensive environmental impact assessment, which shows that the project has no significant negative impact on the environment, the company said in a news release. The conclusion is in line with that of the Dutch environmental impact report, the most comprehensive study ever carried out on the environmental impact of a gas extraction project in the Netherlands, according to the release.

ONE-Dyas CEO Chris de Ruyter van Steveninck, said, "Getting the go-ahead in both the Netherlands and Germany shows we are doing the right thing and that we have developed the project convincingly. The transition to 100 percent renewable [energy] takes time. As long as there is local demand for natural gas, we will ensure that it is produced with the smallest carbon footprint possible. The approvals we have received are [a] mutual commitment to ensuring energy supply, facilitating the energy transition, and achieving the goals of the climate agreement in a safe and responsible manner."

ONE-Dyas aims to supply the first natural gas to Dutch and German households by the end of the year, with preparation for the project underway. The N05-A platform was installed in the Dutch part of the North Sea on August 6, 2024. The platform will be the first Dutch offshore gas treatment platform in the North Sea to run entirely on wind energy.

Under the project, ONE-Dyas, together with its partners Hansa Hydrocarbons and EBN, intends to extract natural gas from field N05-A and from surrounding fields in the German and Dutch North Sea. In 2022, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate (EZK) granted ONE-Dyas the final licenses to develop the N05-A gas field in the Dutch North Sea.

In addition, ONE-Dyas uses an existing pipeline which is already in the North Sea, so only a short new pipeline is needed as a side branch to bring natural gas to land, the company said. Further, platform N05-A has been designed to be suitable for the production of green hydrogen in the near future.

ONE-Dyas is the largest privately owned exploration and production operating company in the Netherlands, according to the company’s website. The company describes itself as having extensive experience managing a successful and balanced upstream portfolio of operated and non-operated exploration and production assets in the North Sea. It had an average production base of around 20,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2023.
